Malaysia–Thailand Geological Cooperation Explores the Uniqueness of the Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark

Lenggong – The UNESCO Global Geopark of Lenggong is honoured to welcome participants of the 43rd Meeting of the Malaysia–Thailand Border Joint Geological Survey Working Group and the 23rd Meeting of the Malaysia–Thailand Joint Geological Survey Committee for a field trip following the meeting held in Lenggong.

The visit brought together geoscience officers and members from the Department of Mineral Resources Thailand and the Malaysian Department of Mineral and Geoscience (DMG) to explore the unique geological, geoarchaeological and cultural heritage found in the Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark.

The tour began at the Lenggong Geopark Gallery, which introduced participants to the Earth's history spanning more than 541 million years. The journey through Lenggong's geological history encompassed the formation of ancient seas, volcanic activity, continental drift, the emergence of limestone landscapes, meteorite impacts and the Toba volcanic eruption.

The field visit then continued to several key geosites, including:

🔹 Bukit Bunuh Suevit – A site that preserves evidence of a large-scale meteorite impact approximately 1.83 million years ago, thereby revealing the fascinating connection between geological processes and early human activity in Lenggong.

🔹 Toba Ash Deposits at Kampung Chepor and Bukit Sapi – Both of these locations display the Youngest Toba Tuff (YTT) deposits formed by the massive Toba Volcano eruption approximately 74,000 years ago. At Bukit Sapi, the well-preserved Toba ash deposits are estimated to reach a thickness of up to six metres.

🔹 Lenggong Archaeological Museum – Participants are also introduced to Malaysia's prehistoric history through a collection of stone tools, archaeological finds, and the story of Perak Man, a prehistoric human skeleton estimated to be between 10,000 and 11,000 years old.

This field trip highlights the close relationship between geological science, archaeological heritage and human history, thereby reflecting the identity of the Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark as an area that connects Earth history with human history — “Where Earth's and Human History Intertwine.”

Lenggong UNESCO Global Geopark is also proud to support initiatives that strengthen scientific cooperation, knowledge sharing and professional networking between Malaysia and Thailand, particularly in the fields of geology, geoarchaeology and geopark development.

Such cross-border cooperation not only enriches scientific knowledge but also opens up opportunities for sharing expertise and best practices in the conservation of geoworks and the sustainable development of geoparks at the regional level.
