Description
This site located along the Perak River basin in Lenggong, unveils a fascinating geological history. The terraces, spanning over half a million years, are layered at different altitudes. The oldest terrace, dating back over 500,000 years, rests at an altitude of over 150 m (Bukit Lenggong).
It is followed by subsequent terraces, each with its own chronological epoch, including the second terrace (500,000– 250,000 years ago) at an altitude of 100–150 m (Bukit Suring), the third terrace (250,000–100,000 years ago) at 100–120 m (Bukit Jawa), the fourth terrace (100,000–70,000 years ago) at an altitude of 100 m (Kota Tampan), the fifth terrace (70,000–40,000 years ago) below 100 m (Bukit Bunuh), and the sixth terrace (40,000–13,000 years ago) at an altitude of less than 100 m (Bukit Bunuh).
Currently, the Sungai Perak's level stands at a height of 68 m (the level of Lake Raban). Composed mainly of river gravel with quartzite and quartz embedded in a sand matrix, the ancient terrace exhibits a deposition thickness ranging from 0.5 to 2 meters.
The Perak River's bed in Lenggong has experienced a remarkable drop from 150 m to 68 m above sea level over the course of more than 500,000 years.
Significant
It holds high educational and scientific value at the national level because some of the Quarternary terrace deposits of Sungai Perak has been proven to be a prehistoric Paleolithic site that has already been recognized as a national heritage site and a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Other Heritage
Teres Sungai Perak kuno di Bukit Bunuh, Bukit Jawa, Kg Temelong dan Kota Tampan didapati telah dijadikan sebagai bengkel pembuatan alat batu Paleolitik. The ancient Perak River terraces at Bukit Bunuh, Bukit Jawa, Kg Temelong, and Kota Tampan have been found to have been used as workshops for making Paleolithic stone tools.
