Description
Geoarchaeological Site Bukit Jawa represents an ancient terrace of the Perak River that was used by Paleolithic communities around 200,000 years ago as a stone tool–manufacturing area. Similar to other open-air sites such as Bukit Bunuh and Kota Tampan, the ancestral Sungai Perak river gravels—dominated by quartzite and quartz pebbles from the Papulut Quartzite Formation—were used as the primary raw materials.
The artifacts discovered include tool-making equipment (anvils, cores, and hammerstones), finished products (pebble tools and flake tools), and debitages (chunks, flakes, and chips). It is one of the key sites within the Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2012.
Significant
Bukit Jawa strengthens Lenggong’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Other Heritage
This 200,000-year-old Paleolithic stone tool workshop demonstrates a direct relationship between humans and their environment, in which they utilized ancestral Perak River gravel deposits dominated by quartzite and quartz from the Papulut Quartzite Formation as the primary raw materials.
