Description

Geoarchaeological Site Gua Kajang is located at the foot of Bukit Batu Kapur Kepala Gajah. This site was the first cave site in the country to be subjected to archaeological excavations, in 1917.

This 35- metre-long tunnel-shaped cave with a floor area of around 400 m2 has been used by prehistoric people from 14,000–2,000 years ago, involving Palaeolithic, Epi-Palaeolithic, and Neolithic cultures as a natural home.

This cave has also been used as a Palaeolithic and Neolithic burial site. It is one of the key sites within the Lenggong Valley UNESCO World Heritage Site, which was inscribed in 2012.

Significant

Gua Kajang strengthens Lenggong’s status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Other Heritage

The use of limestone caves as dwellings and burial sites and river gravel as the basic material for stone tools demonstrates the ongoing relationship between humans and nature. During the British colonial period, Gua Kajang was used as a route between Gerik-Lenggong-Kuala Kangsar, known as the Berkely Trail using horses and elephants.
