Heritage Type
Volcanology.
Value
Geoheritage site of international significant.
Description
The site representing the Lawin tuff is an ex-quarry site in Felda Papulut. Lawin tuff rocks are widely distributed around the Lawin - Gerik area. These rocks consist of thick layers of pyroclastic deposits from volcanic materials that were deposited in a shallow marine environment.
They were formed as a result of volcanic eruptions that occurred during the Ordovician period (490–465 million years ago). The Lawin tuff also represents deposits from ancient volcanic arc eruptions that extended from Malaysia to Thailand.
During this eruption, Lenggong was located in the Southern Hemisphere, near the Australian continent. Starting from the Carboniferous period (360 million years ago), ancient Lenggong began moving towards the equator to its present position.
Significant
The variations in composition among these Lawin Tuff (480–460 million years ago) rock types highlight the complex geological history and the oldest episode volcanic dynamics of the region, illustrating the significant influence of past tectonic events on the current landscape.
Other Heritage
Volcanic rocks such as tuff contain essential minerals that enhance soil fertility, supporting the growth of unique flora and fauna.
