Heritage Type
Stratigraphy and Sedimentology.
Value
Geoheritage site of national significant.
Description
This site exhibits the presence of limestone lenses within the Kroh Formation (490–419 million years ago), which originated from an ancient deep-marine environment. Contact metamorphism subsequently transformed these rocks into marble during igneous intrusion in the Triassic Period (255–210 million years ago).
The presence of a shear zone between the limestone and the igneous rocks, displaying folded structures, provides supporting evidence for this metamorphic transition process. Among the karst features found in this area are cave morphologies that also preserve archaeological evidence of ancient human occupation, particularly from the Neolithic period.
Significant
Limestone lenses of the Kroh Formation preserved as limestone hills and containing caves.
Other Heritage
Gua Singa provides evidence of prehistory habitation since 9,250±60 years ago.
